Monteverde, the mysterious village

130 km from San José, lies the village of Monteverde.

Cloudy rainforest where many animals live: more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds (among them the Quetzal), 120 species of amphibians and reptiles.

Without forgetting the flora of the region, there are more than 3000 species of plants: a paradise for nature lovers.

One can enjoy beautiful panoramic views in the rainforest with excursions through suspension bridges – for example – to Selvatura Park. You have access to a hiking trail (1h30 – 2h00) with 8 suspension bridges in the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest. In this same park, there is the possibility of zip-lining: 15 cables and 18 platforms: The biggest zip line in Latin America!

You can enjoy the landscapes of the cloud forest, perfect to feel a good dose of adrenaline. Recommended activity for those who love adventure.

If you ever want quieter activities, you can visit the Monteverde Reserve: created in 1972, it is a private reserve, located throughout the “Sierra de Tilarán”, west of Lake Arenal.

The natural reserves

This reserve is the most famous in the country, but only 3% of the territory of the reserve is open to the visit, the rest is under protection. If you prefer, you can take a nocturnal tour and enjoy the nocturnal biodiversity that offers a large amount of animals: bats, frogs, snakes, spiders (especially tarantulas), porcupines among Other …

In addition, there is the Santa Elena Reserve which is located at the top of the village of the same name. It – like the Monteverde reserve – offers the opportunity to observe many species of birds. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve has been open to the public since March 1st, 1992. It was created thanks to the determination of the community and the participation of the students of the Colegio Técnico Profesional de Santa Elena and their families, in addition to the support from organizations such as Youth Challenge Internacional and La Asociación Ambiental Vida.

All this with one goal: to share the benefits of tourism in the region. Another recommended tour in your itinerary if you like coffee is the “Don Juan Coffee Tower”. You will have the opportunity to participate and learn very traditional processes for planting and preparing our gold grain.
