Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano

The youngest volcano in Costa Rica

The Arenal Volcano, 7km away from the city of La Fortuna is a marvel of nature whose highest point is 1,648 meters above sea level. Its silhouette forms an almost perfect cone.

The Arenal is the youngest volcano in Costa Rica, but it is also one of the most active. Since 2010, he has nevertheless entered a phase of rest.

While visiting the Arenal National Park, you will see traces of the lava flows of some of its most important eruptions, such as that of 1968 which marked the beginning of a very strong period of activity mixing lava avalanches and explosions over a period of 42 years. Another lava flow is clearly visible, the one of 1993 during which four avalanches of lava took place in only 20 minutes.

Created in 1995, the Arenal National Park is open every day from 8am to 4pm and is 16km from La Fortuna.

It covers a total area of 12,000 hectares and allows visitors to take short paths in the heart of the secondary forest. The first trail is 2 km and the second 3.4 km long. Along these trails, in addition to admiring the ancient lava flows, you can from some hight points of view admire the silhouette of the volcano, The Arenal Lake and the surrounding landscapes.

The park is also home to many animal species that you may have the chance to see during your walk. There are agoutis, coatis, gray foxes, anteaters, tapirs, monkeys and even felines such as cougars, pumas and ocelots, but these remain far from the paths taken by visitors. As for birds, more than 500 species have been identified within the park, such as magpies, woodpeckers, toucans and even hummingbirds.

In the region of Arenal volcano in addition to visiting the national park you can enjoy many activities. Indeed, a large number of excursions are offered on foot, by mountain bike or even on horseback. You can also go rafting and canyoning, visit the hanging bridges or go zip-lining for the more adventurous visitors.

You will also have the opportunity to see the Catarata de La Fortuna, an impressive waterfall which is over 7 meters high. Finally, if you want to relax a little, you can go to the thermal waters of Ecotermales or those of Tabacon. In a dream setting, you will swim in the naturally heated waters of the volcano, and even enjoy a dinner on site.

The city of La Fortuna is also a lively place where you will find many restaurants and activities to entertain you, while having a breathtaking view of the volcano.
